An LLC does not choose your tax treatment

Creating an LLC under state law does not automatically make the business an S corporation or eliminate self-employment tax. Federal classification depends on ownership and valid elections. Entity decisions also affect payroll, filing obligations, administrative costs and state taxes.

Another common misconception is that spending a dollar saves a dollar of tax. A deduction normally reduces taxable income rather than paying back the entire purchase. Buy equipment because the business needs it, then evaluate the applicable deduction and depreciation rules.

Business labels do not turn personal spending into deductions

A business card, company logo or payment from the business bank account does not prove deductibility. Expenses generally need to be ordinary and necessary to the trade or business. Mixed-use items require an appropriate allocation and records. Travel, meals, vehicles and home offices have additional requirements.

Similarly, hiring a relative does not make every payment deductible. Real work, reasonable compensation and payroll rules still matter. The details can change with the business’s tax classification.

Income exists without a 1099

Cash receipts and customer payments can be taxable even when no reporting form is issued. Reconcile income across invoices, platforms and deposits while avoiding duplication. A reporting threshold determines a payer’s form obligation, not whether your receipt is income.

Finally, an extension does not postpone payment, and a large refund does not necessarily mean a lower total tax. Accurate books, timely estimated payments and a planning review provide a stronger foundation than internet shortcuts. Bring questions to your preparer before committing to a transaction or election.
