Make the business activity easy to follow

For an Altamonte Springs home-based consultant, online seller or service provider, the first bookkeeping goal is a clear record of what the business earns and spends. Use a dedicated business account where appropriate and save customer invoices, platform statements and purchase receipts in a consistent system.

Reconcile gross sales to payouts. A platform may withhold fees or refunds before sending money to the bank, so the deposit alone does not explain the transaction. Record owner transfers clearly to avoid treating personal funding as customer revenue.

Document shared costs before claiming deductions

Keep the underlying bills and a record explaining how any business allocation was determined. Flag shared telephone, internet or home expenses for review instead of applying a blanket percentage to every charge.

A business operated from home does not automatically qualify for a federal home-office deduction. Ask the preparer to review eligibility and the appropriate method before including an amount on the return. Keep questions about use of space and shared costs on a running list throughout the year.

Retain the local registration file

Review the City of Altamonte Springs business tax receipt process and its home-based business guidance for the actual activity and address. Ask the city about applicable restrictions and approvals. A receipt does not answer every operational question.

Maintain a monthly close folder containing reconciled statements, sales reports, receipts and unresolved items. Share that folder through the secure client process when working with Jacobwise & Co. This gives the team a useful starting point and reduces the need to reconstruct the business from personal bank activity at filing time.
