Start with the actual business location

An Atlanta mailing address does not necessarily put a business inside the City of Atlanta. Confirm the municipality and physical operating address before applying city guidance. A business in a nearby city or an unincorporated county area may work with a different local authority.

The city’s occupation-tax requirements are separate from forming an LLC with Georgia, obtaining a federal EIN or filing income-tax returns. Treat each registration and recurring filing as its own responsibility.

Understand the figures behind the renewal

City guidance identifies gross receipts, employee information and business classification as relevant to occupation-tax calculations. Do not substitute net profit for gross receipts or select a business category solely because it produces a lower charge. Confirm the reporting period and treatment applicable to your business directly with the Office of Revenue.

Businesses with activities in several locations should review the city’s current instructions before allocating receipts. The location of a customer, company headquarters and place where work is performed can raise different questions; one bank-deposit total does not answer them all.

Make the renewal part of your bookkeeping calendar

Keep a reconciliation from sales and other relevant receipts to the amount reported, along with employee records, the applicable business classification and supporting returns or statements requested by the city. Retain the submitted renewal, payment confirmation and issued certificate together.

Check the city’s current renewal process and deadline each cycle. Calendar both submission and payment, and resolve discrepancies before renewing. Tell your bookkeeper about a move, ownership change, additional location or closure so the local account and financial records can be reviewed together. For help organizing the supporting numbers, contact our team before the renewal becomes urgent.
