Rules and decisions to review
- Review dependency and the child tax credit using age, relationship, residency, support and identification requirements.
- Check head-of-household eligibility separately from dependency; paying the required household costs and other conditions matter.
- Consider the earned income tax credit where income and qualifying-child rules allow it.
- Compare eligible work-related dependent-care costs with employer dependent-care benefits so the same expenses are not used twice.
- Coordinate education credits and education-account distributions for older children.
- Update withholding after a birth, adoption, custody change or significant income change. Credit amounts and rules must match the tax year.
A practical example
Two parents cannot simply alternate every tax benefit by agreement. Federal rules can treat dependency, head-of-household status, dependent-care credit and earned income credit differently after a separation.
Records to gather
Gather birth and Social Security records, residence calendars, support records, childcare invoices, school statements and custody-related documents.
Your next step
Review each child-related benefit separately and update withholding after household changes. Provide residency and support records, especially when another taxpayer may also claim the child.
