Understand the federal treatment

Contributions to a 529 plan generally are not deductible on a federal income-tax return. Earnings may grow tax-deferred and qualifying distributions can be federally tax-free. State contribution benefits and state treatment of withdrawals vary; verify the rules for the state involved.

A plan is not a blanket tax-free spending account. The beneficiary, expense type, amount and timing matter. A nonqualified distribution may make the earnings portion taxable and subject to an additional tax, unless an exception applies.

Check which expenses qualify

Eligible higher-education expenses can include tuition and required fees, books and equipment, with conditions and limits for other costs such as room and board. Recent law changes expanded certain K–12 and credential expenses. For 2026, the annual federal limit for eligible elementary and secondary expenses is $20,000 per beneficiary across all 529 accounts.

Do not assume every training course, school charge or living expense qualifies. Review the current IRS rules and plan procedures, and check whether your state conforms to federal expansions. Special rules also apply to apprenticeship costs, student-loan payments and transfers to Roth IRAs.

Coordinate withdrawals with the tax return

Retain tuition bills, receipts, enrollment information, scholarships and Form 1099-Q. Match distributions and qualified expenses for the relevant calendar year. The same expenses generally cannot support both tax-free 529 treatment and an education credit.

Before withdrawing a large amount, estimate the family’s credit eligibility and available expenses. Tell your preparer about all accounts and assistance rather than only the university bill. This is education-tax guidance; investment selection and plan suitability require a separate decision.
